Ben Cruz, 27, who retired from professional boxing about three years ago after a 13-fight amateur and 11-bout professional career, was convicted after a two day trial that ended in the Perth District Court yesterday. Cruz was convicted of selling a prohibited drug, possessing a prohibited drug with intent to sell or supply and failing to ensure the safe keeping of ammunition. Detectives found almost 17g of amphetamines and $46,500 cash during a raid on Mr Cruz' Alexander Heights house in March 2007. Mr Cruz, believed to be an associate of both the Coffin Cheaters and Gypsy Jokers, won the overall Australian Golden Gloves championship in 2002 and also claimed the Australian super-featherweight title. A regular at Harry's Gym in Balcatta, he was unbeaten during his 11 professional bouts and won seven by knockouts. He was yesterday remanded in custody and is due to reappear in court for sentencing on Monday, September 8.
