Police were lying in wait for Luke Ryan, pictured, at the prison after suspicions were raised about his conduct. They found cocaine, cannabis and cannabis resin in the 34-year-old’s black Reebok bag. Heroin and more than £3,000 in cash was found at his Southampton home, it was claimed Winchester Crown Court heard that Ryan told police he was taking the items into the jail because he was being blackmailed. He said inmates had threatened to tell the prison governor about his second job as a doorman of a nightclub, something he was suspended for in April 2007. In a second interview with police in March, Ryan produced two letters – dated in December 2007, before his arrest – in which he claims he wrote to the prison, highlighting the situation he was in. In them the ex-Surrey police officer admitted bringing CDs and pornographic material into the jail and said he had been “subject to a campaign of threats, intimidation and bullying”. Stephen Parish, prosecuting, said: “Make no bones about this, these letters were forged in the sense the defendant wrote them after the event in an attempt to pervert the course of justice and to pretend he’d brought things to the attention of the prison. “This qualifies for The Man Booker Prize for fiction.” Mr Parish, referring to messages on a Nokia mobile phone found at Ryan’s flat, added: “They show first of all that this defendant was far more involved than he said and secondly that he was not acting under any duress.” Ryan, of Hill Lane, denies a conspiracy to supply cocaine and a lesser charge of possession of the drug, with intent to supply. Barry Neil Hatwell, 35, of no fixed address, gave Paul Daly a shot of heroin because Mr Daly had asked him due to a fear of needles.But a few hours later Mr Daly was found dead in a squat in Christchurch Road, Boscombe and died due to the dangerous cocktail of heroin and alcohol.Winchester Crown Court heard that on June 2 last year Hatwell, Mr Daly and two other men had taken a large commercial drinks fridge from the squat and sold it to buy heroin.All four men returned to the flat and Hatwell cooked up the heroin and drew it into four separate syringes. The two men and Hatwell injected themselves before Hatwell injected Mr Daly.Hatwell later left the squat and the two other men fell asleep - one woke to find Mr Daly dead.Three people were arrested at the scene and Hatwell was arrested the following day.Initially Hatwell denied the offence but later admitted injecting Mr Daly with heroin by consent.He was charged with manslaughter, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to three years in prison.A post mortem examination found that Mr Daly died due to heroin toxicity, exacerbated by consumption of alcohol.A report from a Home Office pathologist said: "The amount of alcohol present was relatively moderate."However, alcohol is itself a respiratory depressant which would have worsened the effects of heroin in this case."Mr Daly, 34, lived in the Charminster area and worked for a supermarket in Boscombe. DS Craig Travers of Bournemouth Police, said: "This case highlights the fact that if you are a heroin user and other people are giving you heroin you can never know the strength of what you are taking."

Lawrence Padoan (51), of Wykes Lane, Donington, and John Terrence Smith (55), of Roman Bank, Holbeach Bank, used their legitimate companies as a front for the cannabis importation. Customs officers swooped and foiled the conspiracy when the consignment of 4,398 cannabis blocks, with a street value of just under £3m, arrived among potatoes at Dover in April 2003. At Winchester Crown Court in September the pair were jailed for five years after being convicted of conspiring to smuggle cannabis resin. Their case was referred to the Appeal Court in London by the Attorney General, Baroness Scotland QC, who argued the sentences were "unduly lenient". On Wednesday Lord Justice Thomas, sitting with Mr Justice Davis and Mr Justice David Clarke, agreed and increased the pair's jail term to eight years. The men were arrested after a National Crime Squad inquiry which led to several arrests in 2003 and culminated in four separate trials. Padoan and Smith used their companies as a front for the cannabis importation from Spain with Padoan's named as the potato shipper and the delivery address given as Smith's firm. Lord Justice Thomas said there was continuing dispute over the exact roles the pair played in the conspiracy. They claimed they were only receiving £400. However, there was evidence of a series of meetings between the pair and the main mover behind the plot and, although they were not towards the top of the chain of command, they had been more than "mere foot soldiers", he said. Padoan and Smith, who was in poor health and whose company was in "dire financial straits", chose to participate because of their apparent respectability and legitimate businesses, added the judge. Ruling that their previous unblemished character could only be of limited relevance, Lord Justice Thomas said: "Deterrent sentences are required to deal with those who are attempted to become involved in matters of this kind."
