Jonathan Lara, 25, had been under investigation by Pembroke, Marshfield, Hanover and Scituate police for a few months, according to Pembroke Police Chief Michael Ohrenberger.Police believed that Lara and Carlos Carrasquillo, 40, of Brockton were going to make a drug transaction in the parking lot across from the Burger King on Church Street, near the Marshfield line. When the two showed up and conducted such a transaction under police surveillance late Monday afternoon, officers approached the car, Ohrenberger said.Lara then locked himself in the vehicle and “the officers observed him swallow several packets that appeared to be cocaine,” Ohrenberger said, adding that five packages of cocaine were found with Lara once the car was opened. Carrasquillo also had cocaine on him, Ohrenberger said.The men were arrested shortly after 5 p.m. Monday. Both were charged with cocaine possession with intent to distribute, Class B drug possession, conspiracy to violate drug laws and committing a drug violation near a school.Lara also was charged with resisting arrest. Carrasquillo, who also was charged with providing a false name, was held on an outstanding warrant.Carrasquillo was arraigned Tuesday in Plymouth District Court, where he is due back Oct. 6 for a pretrial hearing. Although he posted bail of $200, he was transported to Brockton District Court because of the outstanding warrant. Lara was taken to Jordan Hospital on Monday and later transferred to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. Ohrenberger said Tuesday evening that Lara was still being guarded by a Pembroke officer at the hospital. Members of the hospital staff had been trying all day to get him to expel the swallowed cocaine, the chief said.Lara was likely to be released this morning and taken to Plymouth District Court for arraignment, Ohrenberger said

Rose was never charged, according to Superintendent Eugene Opperman. Opperman dismissed media reports suggesting he said two rugby players were to appear in court yesterday. But he did confirm the cocaine charge. Yesterday the lawyer representing the accused, Boela Van der Merwe, said the case against Benjamin was remanded for a written representation to be submitted to the senior prosecutor.The Lion’s spokesman maintained yesterday they believed the drug had been planted. “After these allegations surfaced early this year, we then appointed our lawyers to look into the matter and they came back to us with a report that showed nothing to it. “We also do random drug testing on all our players... and the tests have never indicated any of our players using drugs,” said Manie Reyneke.

William A. Ramos, 36, of 4 Vine Ave., Roxbury, and Edward Mercado, 27, of 106 Lafayette St., Salem, are each being held on $10,000 bail and will be arraigned today at Salem District Court. Ramos is charged with three counts of cocaine distribution, and Mercado faces two counts of the same charge. "There's different places they would meet them (drug buyers) around town," Detective Bill Jennings said. "We finally got somebody into them and made some undercover buys. There were a lot of neighborhood calls."The charges stem from previous undercover drug purchases, Jennings said. He added that no drugs were found on either suspect or in the car. Jennings alleged Ramos, who was driving the car and locked the door when police approached, swallowed the drugs. Police did seize approximately $200 in cash, the 2004 Toyota Camry the suspects were riding in and cell phones, which repeatedly rang. Jennings said detectives answered the calls and responded to the callers' location to confirm Ramos as the one they purchased drugs from. Police had been circling around Ramos for years after a number of vehicles and license plate numbers, identified by neighbors, came back to Ramos or at his address in Boston. Jennings said Ramos would often change his license plate number with the Registry of Motor Vehicles. He changed his number most recently on Monday. Jennings said Ramos would make purchases in side streets along Federal Street, North Street and Boston Street on the assumption residents were all in school or work. Along with Bona and Jennings, detectives Capt. Paul Tucker, Lt. Tom Griffin, Sgt. James Page, Eric Connolly, John Doyle and Tom Brennan assisted. Also taking part were Patrolman Mike Levesque and members of the Essex County Sheriff's Department, as well as a drug-sniffing dog

Devon K. Chavis, 30, was sitting in a car on the grounds of the college on Aug. 17, 2007, when the officer saw him hand something to a man who walked up to him. The man on foot ran away when he saw the squad car approach. Chavis tried to drive off down Mill Road, but the officer stopped him, authorities said. Chavis gave the officer three different accounts of why he was on the college grounds, authorities said.An Edison police officer arrived and confronted Chavis with the other officer. Chavis appeared under the influence of narcotics, stuttering and giving incoherent answers, authorities said.After they asked him to step out of his car, they saw a plastic bag sticking out of the back of his shorts, authorities said.The bag contained several vials of crack and powder cocaine, authorities said. Chavis was indicted in October on two drug charges. He faced up to five years in prison before joining the Drug Court program at Middlesex County Courthouse in November. He failed the monitoring and probation-like program and did not show for a court hearing in June.Chavis is 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighs about 260 pounds. He says they asked him about his contacts with the Taliban as well as reports that he had ties to both Osama bin Laden and the region's opium trade _ allegations he denied. "I told the agents I had not worked in the narcotics business," he said. The agents invited Noorzai to the United States to meet with people in Washington for further discussions. He was questioned for 11 days in a Manhattan hotel and then was arrested.Afghan tribal leader Bashir Noorzai resisted the Soviet Union's invasion of his country three decades ago, then put down his weapons when U.S. forces showed up following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. "Afghanistan is in anarchy," the one-time Taliban ally recalls telling his tribesmen. "Americans are establishing our future government."Rather than thank him, Noorzai claims the U.S. government betrayed him: In 2005, he was branded a most-wanted drug kingpin, lured to New York and arrested. The DEA says the assault on the drug world's elite has had an effect on the streets of New York and other cities, where cocaine prices are up and purity is down. Federal authorities consider Noorzai one of the bigger catches in the war on drugs. But the defendant, who has three wives and eight children, also stands out for his movie script-worthy history, some of it described in a sworn statement filed by the defense. Noorzai was born in 1963 in Maiwand, Afghanistan, and raised by his grandfather, chief of the Noorzai tribe _ a million people in southern and western Afghanistan and in Pakistan's Baluchistan province. When his grandfather retired, he was succeeded by one of Noorzai's uncles, who vanished when Communists took power in 1978 and confiscated the family's land. A year later, the family fled to Pakistan after the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan and began arresting and killing tribal leaders.In 1981, at age 18, Noorzai and his armed tribesmen joined a jihad against the Soviets and the Communist government. When the Soviets withdrew in the late 1980s, he claimed he had been paid by the CIA to help retrieve Stinger missiles it had supplied to the rebel forces. But with the country in chaos, he decided in 1996 to support the Taliban. "In my view at the time, and in the view of many Afghanis who were tired of the many years of violence and war, the Taliban were not corrupt and they did not steal from people and abuse their power in this way," he said. After the 2001 terrorist attacks, Noorzai _ then chief of the tribe _ decided to help establish a U.S.-supported government in Afghanistan, his defense says. He met with U.S. military representatives and instructed his followers to collect and store all weaponry and munitions, his lawyers say. In January 2002, Noorzai claims, he turned over 3,000 arms, including 400 anti-aircraft missiles, to U.S. forces.

Donald Seymour, 40, pleaded guilty earlier this week to trafficking unstamped tobacco and to possession of cocaine. It was the day his trial on several drug charges was set to begin in provincial court.Mr. Seymour was ordered to pay $26,946 to the federal and provincial governments for violating the Excise Act by being in possession of 160,000 illegal cigarettes for the purpose of trafficking. The smokes were found in his vehicle when he was pulled over by RCMP officers last year. Narcotics officers also found 28 grams of cocaine and a few grams of marijuana, for which he was also charged. He was fined $1,000 for possession of cocaine, but all other charges were withdrawn in exchange for his two guilty pleas. Mr. Seymour, the former head of a cocaine gang in Vancouver in the mid-1990s, along with a brother and two cousins, was shot by a former Hell’s Angels associate in 2005 over a drug debt. His older brother Kenny was killed in the shooting, outside their Glace Bay home, and Mr. Seymour was seriously injured in that shooting. A bullet struck several of his organs, and he requires a cane to walk. Nelson MacPhee of Dominion was sentenced last year to 15 years in prison for the shootings. Mr. Seymour has two years to pay the fine. If he doesn’t pay, he could face more jail time. "Given his finances, it’s unlikely he’s going to pay the fine," Crown attorney Dave Iannetti said.

Jasmin Bollinger, 19, from Freiburg in Germany, was lured into the drugs trade by a friend of an ex-boyfriend who told her she could pay her debts by driving to England. But her trip to this country was longer than she thought because she will be spending the next six-and-a-half years in prison after admitting drug-smuggling. Melanie McIntosh, prosecuting at Canterbury Crown Court, said Bollinger told Customs officers she was meeting her boyfriend in the London suburb of Woolwich but didn’t know his address.She said the car had been rented from a hire company and that she had been to England three times before.The 100 per cent-pure drugs were in silver packages hidden in the panels.When she was interviewed, she told officers she was given 1,000 euros to make two dummy runs to Britain.She said she was contacted by a man in Freiburg who told her to go to Amsterdam.Bollinger met the man in the Dutch city and he drove her car away. It was returned two hours later and she drove to catch the Ramsgate ferry at Ostend.She was worried she was carrying something illegal but couldn’t find it after a thorough search, so she drove on. “When I asked what was in the car, I was told to ask no questions,” she told investigators.Bollinger said she was afraid of the men who sent her on her mission – that’s why she carried on driving.Nicholas Jones, defending, said the drugs trade attracted young, naive people who wanted to earn easy money.At first Bollinger thought she was taking money out of Germany.Mr Jones said: “Like many young students, she found herself in debt. She was approached by a friend of a friend and in an act of catstrophic stupidity she agreed to smuggle drugs.”Mr Jones said family friends were horrified that she had got herself in trouble. When she heard of the tough sentence she could face, she was horrified.He said: “She faces the best years of her life in custody. Officers found almost 16kg of amphetamine, Teesside Crown Court heard. Police believed the high-purity drugs would be “bulked out” and could have a value of £310,000.Large quantities of drugs were found in two Middlesbrough addresses linked to Louth. In a garage on Chervil Court, police found several kilos of cutting agents, six bars of cannabis weighing 1.48kg and worth £6,334, along with bags and trays with traces of amphetamine, gloves and chopping boards.In the bedroom, they discovered 934 Ecstasy tablets, all worth £4,670. Officers also found 391g of glucose, a hold-all with traces of Ecstasy and £510 cash. At a home on Aberdare Road, Grangetown, scales carrying amphetamine powder were uncovered.Louth, of Aberdare Road, admitted possessing Class A, B and C drugs with intent to supply. He had no previous convictions.Robert Mochrie, defending, said the previously anti-drugs dad was “mortified”, remorseful and anxious about causing grief to his family.Louth fell into using cocaine after a marriage break-up: “The people who supplied him had a grip on him and effectively gave him the ultimatum - look after these drugs and we will reduce the debt, or face the consequences.“He started out as being a warehouseman. This then developed into physically transporting drugs around the area. In return for this, his debt was knocked off bit by bit.”Louth, whose partner stood by him in court, wrote a letter to Judge Peter Armstrong and had a character reference from an ex-colleague at Corus. The judge said it was sad to see him in the dock.He accepted there was genuine remorse, it was out of character and Louth might never see the courts again. He jailed him for four years, including 145 days already served.

Amar Bashir pleaded guilty at the first opportunity to offences of possessing cocaine and cannabis with intent to supply and supplying the drugs

Amar Bashir, of Bradford Road, Riddlesden, was arrested by police after being stopped in a car in Keighley last November. Prosecutor Nigel Hamiton told Bradford Crown Court today that Bashir, who had no previous convictions, was in the car with a woman who later told police that he had asked her to store drugs for him at her home. During a search of her home police recovered skunk cannabis valued at almost £3,500 together with nearly £800 of cocaine. Bashir admitted in a police interview that he had asked the woman to look after the package of drugs because he was uncomfortable about it being stored at his address. He went on to reveal that he had been working as a so-called “waiter” for three or four weeks. “Effectively he was the link between the street dealers and the supplier higher up in the chain,” said Mr Hamilton. Bashir pleaded guilty at the first opportunity to offences of possessing cocaine and cannabis with intent to supply and supplying the drugs on earlier occasions. Barrister Stephen Wood said Bashir’s offending mainly involved cannabis rather class A drugs. He revealed that his client was the eldest son of a decent, hard-working family and he had been working at a care home recently. Judge Roger Scott accepted that Bashir’s involvement had been as a custodian for drugs or as “waiter”, but he added: “Both of those occupations are important in the dealing of drugs on the streets of West Yorkshire.”

According to an affidavit filed with the court, Morrie had been on furlough since Feb. 12 for charges of simple assault, two felony counts of possession of a regulated drug and careless and negligent driving.As a condition of his furlough, Morrie had to reside at an apartment on Valley Street in Springfield, but on May 30, a community correctional officer learned Morrie had moved out, taking two handguns with him. On June 2, a warrant was issued for Morrie's arrest, according to court records. According to an affidavit filed with the court by Detective Sgt. Shawn T. Bradley Edward Webber was charged Thursday in Lake Superior Court with theft and possession of cocaine. Court documents state that Webber had been seen inside Gander Mountain, west of Westfield Southlake mall, and was leaving the store when he activated the anti-theft sensor alarms. The suspect, when approached by Hobart officer Mike Webber, admitted he had stolen two pellet guns and some pellets from the store which he had placed inside the trunk of his car. Webber then gave the officer permission to open his trunk and that’s when the guns and a bag containing 3 grams of cocaine were discovered, court documents state. He told police he had driven the car, which is owned by his girlfriend’s father, to Chicago and had met with two men there while all used heroin and Xanax. Webber further stated that one of the two men had driven the car back to Indiana and asked him to steal air guns and pellets from Gander Mountain. He was booked into the jail on felony drug charges.

Julian Tavernier, 29, returned to Durham today to hear the criminal proceeds ruling almost six months after being jailed by the same court for six years for the failed drug smuggling bid. The earlier hearing, in March, was told Tavernier, whose family originates in the Dominican Republic, concealed the class A drug stash in a biscuit tin posted to his then girlfriend, in County Durham, from the Caribbean island in late August last year. Police intercepted the package after being tipped off by Customs officials when it arrived at Gatwick Airport among mail from the Dominican Republic. The parcel was re-sealed and sent on to the intended address, in Seaham. An under-cover officer posing as a parcel delivery driver called at the house, in Bethune Avenue, where Cheryl Pattison signed for the package. Police raided the house five minutes later and arrested Pattison and her sister, Kirsty Mackay, who tried to flee from the back door with the package. Tavernier, Pattison's partner at the time, was later arrested on his return to the country. Tavernier, then 28, Pattison, 29, and her sister, 25-year-old Kirsty Mackay all admitted being concerned in the importation of a prohibited drug. Pattison and Mackay were each jailed for five years for their part in the crime. Although the court was yesterday told Tavernier's estimated benefits from the drug trade were £30,314, Judge John Evans was only able to order confiscation of the remaining £7,979 assets from the sale of the car.

The seized drugs had an estimated street value of £542,000 and were found to contain 2.95kgs of 100 per cent pure cocaine, according to investigators.The court heard that French, of Eastfield, Waltham Cross, was stopped by HM Revenue & Customs officers on the November 27 2006. French told officers that he had been to Calais to buy beer and wine for Christmas. On searching the vehicle, officers found a number of mixed cases of beer and soft drinks and hidden within two of the cases of beer they found three taped packages. The contents of the packages were initially field tested and later forensically analysed showing them to contain cocaine, the court was told.Further investigation and evidence showed Yates, of Monks Closes in Broxbourne, and Smith of Windsor Drive on Sele Farm, to be implicated in the importation. They had travelled independently to Calais via the ferry from Dover, meeting French there and returning to the UK via the Channel Tunnel at the same time.Yates has since absconded and a European Arrest Warrant has been issued for his arrest. He was sentenced in his absence.On sentencing, Judge Adele Williams said: "Cocaine is a dangerous and pernicious drug causing harm to young people and whilst taking account of previous good characters, the sentences imposed match the crime."The case was prosecuted by the Revenue & Customs Prosecutions Office. I’m very upset and we work very, very hard to try to build a reputation in the community, only to have it brought down by the careless actions of Officer Adams is inexcusable," Altamonte Springs Chief Robert Merchant said.The Altamonte Springs Chief of Police and the Seminole County Sheriff also attended the conference. The affidavit reported Adams threatened to kill a Seminole County deputy who filed a complaint of poor performance that resulted in Adams' termination from a Seminole County drug task force.It was reported that Adams told the police informant that after the situation calmed down, he would "take the supervisor out, using a high-powered rifle and a silencer.""Threats have been made by both of the defendants in this case, regarding the safety of a confidential informant and others involved in the investigation," Bodnar said.It was also reported that Adams provided weapons to the police informant who was also a convicted felon and gave that informant information about the names, vehicles and techniques of undercover drug agents."I think the public should have trust in the fact that law enforcement has done the right thing here and caught someone that we believe is involved in a criminal enterprise, we still have to prove it of course, but they’ve done their best to remove someone who is a threat to the community off the street," Bodnar said. Altamonte Springs Chief released Adam’s personnel record showing that while no formal punishments were issued, there were several accounts of citizen complaints stating Adams was rude and disrespectful.Adams and his wife will remain in federal custody in jail until Friday at the least. The two men - alleged ringleader Sylvain Levert, 41, of Chambly, and Serge (Frenchy) Desilets, 54, of Maniwaki - were charged in U.S. District Court in Florida. Affidavits filed in their cases suggest the pair counted on the co-operation of more than one customs agent to smuggle drugs in and out of Canada.The two are suspected of conspiring to smuggle drugs - including marijuana and ecstasy - into the United States in exchange for cocaine smuggled into Canada. According to one affidavit, Desilets was introduced to the undercover agent in May 2007, after a Florida man caught with 11 kilograms of marijuana decided to co-operate with authorities by revealing his supplier. By Aug. 7, 2007, Desilets told the undercover agent he felt comfortable enough to do business with him and was willing to sell him large quantities of hydroponic marijuana grown in Canada.In one of several references in the affidavit to Desilets or Levert claiming to control border agents, Desilets allegedly told the agent last summer "he could get people into and out of Canada without their having to pass through customs."During their first face-to-face meeting in Vermont on Oct. 11, 2007, the undercover agent and Desilets discussed trading more than 400 kilograms of marijuana grown in Canada for 150 kilograms of cocaine from the U.S.During the meeting: "Desilets advised that his organization utilizes a customs border agent to assist their smuggling operation," according to the affidavit.Five days later, Desilets wanted to renegotiate the ratio of drugs to be traded with the undercover agent. According to the affidavit, during the same conversation: "They also discussed the corrupt customs border official in New Brunswick." The "border official" in question is not named in the court document. During Thursday's news conference, RCMP Staff Sgt. Andre Potvin would only say it is possible other border agents would be investigated. On Friday RCMP Cpl. Elaine Lavergne repeated Potvin's comment, but noted no charges have been filed against other CBSA personnel.
